Southdown Babydoll sheep are a heritage breed originating in the South Downs of Sussex, England. They were first developed in the late 18th century by farmer John Ellman, who sought to create a compact and hardy sheep that could thrive on the region's sparse pastures. These sheep became popular for their wool, meat, and friendly, manageable size. Over time, larger Southdown varieties emerged, leading to the Babydoll type almost disappearing. However, in the 1990s, dedicated breeders in the United States revived the original smaller Southdown, now known as Babydoll sheep, cherished for their docile temperament, unique appearance, and sustainable farming benefits.
